Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Clearing Sky, July 13, 1917; watercolor, gouache and pencil on paper, 17 5/8 x 21 1/2 inches; Burchfield Penney Art Center, Gift of Charles Rand Penney, 1994
Morning brings a clearing of the air. A fresh cool breeze clouds loose-flying. Sky bluer. But midday brings continual sultriness. Midafternoon a short hard shower comes - Rain looks like snow - crisscrossed by con¬trary winds. The characteristic of these storms are that they come without warning and are dashing hard but of short duration. Night brings deep clear sky - millions of stars.
