Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), The Corner Store (also known as Corner Store in Winter), January 23, 1918; watercolor, gouache and graphite on paper, 13 1/4 x 16 inches; Burchfield Penney Art Center, Purchased in honor of Anthony Bannon, 2018
A snow gloom morning –
To Washingtonville by way of Millville – Washingtonville a masterpiece of caricature – buildings, houses, people & site even – (The “Corner grocery” and lovers “kidding” each other). Homeward in the dusk; black farmhouses set amid frightful black orchards — Trolley makes a big blue green star along the wire, seen thru a long screen of trees, it twinkles like the sun as we see it walking along a picket fence.
