Buffalo, NY – The Burchfield Penney Art Center is proud to announce the highly anticipated opening of Art in Craft Media 2023, a juried biennial exhibition presented by the Sylvia L. Rosen Endowment for Fine Art in Craft Media. This remarkable exhibition, now in its 17th installment, will kick off on November 10, 2023, and will be on view through March 31, 2024, in the East Gallery.
Art in Craft Media 2023 will celebrate the contemporary work of fine artists in the region who work with a diverse array of craft materials, including glass, fiber, wood, clay, metal, and more. The exhibition features over 100 works by more than 75 artists, reflecting the broad spectrum of creative expressions within the field.
The juror for this year's exhibition is celebrated Onondaga-Seneca artist and potter Peter B. Jones. Commenting on the experience, Jones stated, "I would like to thank the Burchfield Penney Art Center for allowing me the honor of judging this year's Art in Craft Media exhibit. There were a great many entries to review, and I enjoyed seeing what the art scene looks like in our area. It was difficult choosing winning entries from such a diverse selection of professional works.”
In memory of the beloved artist and patron of the arts Sylvia L. Rosen, the exhibition aims to challenge preconceptions and expand our understanding of what craft can be. Executive Director Scott Propeack shares, "This exhibition is unique because Sylvia Rosen knew that it was important for artists working in craft media to have an opportunity to be celebrated. As a ceramic artist herself, Sylvia understood the frustrations of working in an often overlooked medium. We hope that this exhibition honors her legacy of broadening the appreciation of art in craft media."
Experience the exhibition opening on M&T Second Friday, November 10, 2023, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. The evening will also feature the opening of Doug: An Inter-Media Enjambment and live music by soul/groove band The Darts.
