Dec. 14 (Sun.)—
Difficulty getting car started—and Art’s which was in the driveway, also balked. (Hank & Mart had already gone into church in their car, as B & I were going on down to Blair’s for dinner). Had to call in Nenner, and when he said it was merely flooded, my face of course was red—He gave Art a push & started his car. (He said there was no charge, but I gave him a dollar.) Then it turned out we were low on gas. By this time it was 11:00, but we decided to go on anyway. We arrived just as the second hymn was being sung, so it was all right.
A beautiful day for a drive in the country—bright sunlight, not too cold, and a light snow covering everything.
A pleasant time with the Blairs—They make a charming couple and their little girl is a gay little elf. A good dinner, baked ham & scalloped potatoes. After dinner Bob showed some of his recent work (and some of Jeanette’s as well). His work showed a marked improvement—it is not so facile or hasty. There was one in particularly (sic) I loved, a deep woods at twilight, without the eerie quality that goes with such a subject- a pair of owls in flight; another mysterious bird, and a lynx; prominent was a huge old gnarled branch. It was “chock-full” of romance.
As we were leaving he showed us his studio and a new multigraph magazine he had bought. He hopes to publish a little art magazine.
Home about 7:00- B fixed a lunch for Art who starts tonight on his P.O. job (works from 10:00 to 7:00) and we played rummy.
