By marrying a psychedelic twist to its alternative-pop core, Son of the Sun stood out on the regional music scene from its 2007 birth onward. The sound of the band, described as “melodically detailed rock,” rose above the din of vitriolic garage rock and the birthing pangs of various electro offshoots to suggest an affinity with the timelessness we often associate with rock’s great album era.
Not surprising, then, that the group’s 2010 release “The Happy Loss” arrived as full-formed alt-pop, comfortably straddling the line between the familiarity of tradition and the surprise of modernity. It’s a regional classic that is clearly capable of being something even more.
We’ve seen Son of the Sun on many of our various outdoor summer stages over the past few years, opening for major touring acts and, in many cases, giving those acts a run for their money. The band belongs on a big stage, a position it assumes in an unstudied, natural manner.
That said, catching the group in the more intimate confines of the Burchfield Penney Art Center (1300 Elmwood Ave.) is an enticing prospect for other reasons – among them, the fact that the group will be debuting some of the material it has spent the last several months working on. The group will perform two sets, beginning at 5 p.m. Friday as part of the M&T Second Fridays @ the Burchfield Penney series.
