Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Clouds over a House Top, 1916; watercolor on paper, 9 x 12 inches; Image from the Burchfield Penney Art Center Archives
Cold day with fleets of dapply clouds. At noon – sun partially obscured – north sky full of big blue holes. The north side of the house was cold blueish – the west very warm – yellow, the east also warm but more neutral –
((The cold blue light is chastely beautiful, but it falls on evil or hideous things, producing a wonderful contrast))
At the end of the grey afternoon the red sunlight came out + lit up the strange factories – Beautiful white train smoke –
((Small buildings of factories bristle in the black dusk))
