“A Musical Feast,” whose inspirations often hark back to the avant-garde, is presenting a multimedia event at 8 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Burchfield Penney Art Center (1300 Elmwood Ave.). The evening is part of the fall Launch Festival, which honors Gerald O’Grady, the former University at Buffalo English professor and master of adventurous media.
Organizers Charles and Irene Haupt have arranged a program that celebrates a variety of media. An arrangement of Charles Ives’ “Shall We Gather At the River?” features Daisy Wu on guzheng, an ancient Chinese zither-like instrument. Various contemporary video productions add a visual component. Percussionist John Bacon is performing a piece inspired by Hermann Hesse’s “Siddhartha.” The audience also will hear the unique sound of the shakuhachi Japanese bamboo flute.
To balance out the evening, the Fredonia String Trio – violinist David Colwell, violist David Rose and cellist Natasha Farny – is performing Mozart’s sublime Divertimento For String Trio in E flat, K. 563. Colwell and Rose also pill erform Johan Halvorsen’s Passacaglia in G Minor on a Theme by Handel.
Admission is $20, or $10 for students and Burchfield Penney members. Call 878-6011.
