ALFRED, NY – Several artists affiliated with Alfred University will be displaying their work at an upcoming show at the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo.
The show, “Art in Craft Media 2017,” opens on Saturday, Oct. 14, with a reception from 6-8 p.m. at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, located at 1300 Elmwood Ave. in Buffalo. The Center will feature the work of 49 artists who work in glass, metal, fiber, wood and clay. Participating artists were chosen by Monica Moses, editor-in-chief of American Craft magazine.
Artists affiliated with the Alfred University School of Art and Design who will have work displayed at the show include: Sharon McConnell (director of the Fosdick-Nelson Gallery), Ann Currier, Keith Simpson, Karen Donnellan, Hannah Thompsett, Mahlon Huston and Jackie Pancari (wife of David Fredrickson).
McConnell will be exhibiting her work, Cloudscape, an installation comprised of 8,640 hand-dyed squares of fabric which creates a pixilated image of the sky, spread across the floor.
“Like a sand painting, the artwork is vulnerable and temporal, spread across the floor each piece placed without adhesion, the composition existing only during the length of the exhibition,” McConnell said. “From afar, the image of clouds in a blue sky comes into focus; viewed up close the image breaks apart into a geometric abstraction of colored squares like a textile rug or quilt.”
For McConnell, the intersection of these two perspectives is essential, to elicit a bodily response to the tactile properties while interjecting a theme of environmental politics. “Cloudscape’s vulnerabilities become a larger metaphor reminding us of the current fragile state of the earth’s ecology,” she explained.
