The Burchfield Penney Art Center will open its 12th craft art biennial on Saturday, marking the 25th anniversary of the pioneering exhibition. The accomplished Buffalo craft artist Sylvia Rosen and her husband, Nathan, initiated the show in 1988 to bring attention to the underexposed craft artists of Western New York.
“Art in Craft Media” features work by 55 emerging and established artists in media typically associated with craft, including ceramics, glass, wood, paper, clay and fiber.
“When I moved to Buffalo from Ohio in 1943, museums here did not exhibit this realm of creativity and I found this difficult to accept,” Sylvia Rosen said in a Burchfield Penney release. “My husband and I presented [the idea of] starting an endowment for an exhibition and programming to Anthony Bannon, he accepted and it’s been successful ever since.”
