October 8 – Tuesday –
Morning brought a different mood! We both of us felt eager to go –
Off at 11:00 –
All the way to Rochester great sunlit cumulous clouds spread over the sky – a glorious sight.
Lunch at Sibley’s (etc) Department store (6th floor). This was for Bertha a “sentimental journey” – almost fifty years ago, Dick H. had taken her and her brother there for lunch.
After lunch to AAA for directions. The attendant marked for us a route to Oswego and Watertown.
However, the country northward seemed to get more and more flat and uninteresting, and our “destination” far far away – So we decided to go south to Seneca Lake and Watkins Glen. Almost at once the country and color in the trees grew more exciting and interesting. (Thru Sodus, South Sodus, Lyons, + Geneva)
Consulting our AAA book on restaurants + motels we settled on Glen Motor Motel, as it was advertised as being “high on a hill” overlooking the Lake. When we arrived there (about 5:00) we found the rooms to be right down on the lake shore – The restaurant a little above.
Dissatisfied, we went back to an unlisted motel which really was high on the hill with a magnificent view.
Dinner at the Glen Motel, very good, in most attractive surroundings.
Evening watched TV + early to bed.
