Sept. 30 – Wed. –
Cooler and raining – Up from 4:00 to 6:00 AM – Bertha came down to keep me company and I played Haydn’s op. 74 #3 + Mozart’s concerto for flute and harp.
I slept then until 10:00. Bertha then awoke me because Milt Sanderson had arrived at 8:00 and had to get upstairs.
During the morning we looked over catalogues and selected our bath-room fixtures, then after lunch we picked out a “picture window” discussed corner cabinets for the dining room, and new aluminum storm windows for the house.
Evening – to Chestnut Lodge for dinner. We ordered chicken livers, but after a while our waiter came and said the livers were unfit to serve, so we ordered broiled ham instead, which turned out to be delicious.
A little after 8:00 Larry Griffis out with his oils to show me (he is applying for a Guggenheim Fellowship) a very likeable fellow – and his oils very attractive – semi-abstract but based on true forms + natural settings – the color delightful. We talked until 11:30.
Then I called Mary Alice – and explained the mix-up of the pictures. (The box had arrived Monday but she was not at home then, nor on Tuesday, so she would have to go to the express office to pick it up). It was good talking to her.
