Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), September Wind, 1955; watercolor on paper, 14 x 20 inches; Private Collection
A day of great wind & atmosphere.
The landscape is all light – sky pale whitish blue & white; Trees covered with the white of overturned leaves –
Method of painting trees – flat wash of color impression of the season; & towards the center & shadow part of tree work in local color –
At evening hugeness to air – Trees speckled with overturned leaves; many trees are bright yellow; others are half turned & form patterns with the green ones -
As I walk along Certain things, certain markings on trees perhaps, catch my eye; all the other objects are seen indistinctly or not at all.
Thus, we may have a scene with an intensely black tree & near it some ghostlike light trees indistinct.
