Read Colin Dabkowski's the article at www.buffalonews.com about the opening of McCallum Tarry: Intersections at the Burchfield Penney.
As part of Beyond/In Western New York in 2010, the artistic team of Bradley McCallum and Jacqueline Tarry presented an exhibition of paintings overlaid with translucent photographs printed on Chinese silk on the 25th floor of City Hall. The exhibition, which considered the mass exodus of black people from the South and into northern industrial cities like Buffalo, was one of the highlights of the biennial.
And today, with the memory of that jarring exhibition still fresh in the memory of local art fans, the Burchfield Penney Art Center (1300 Elmwood Ave.) will open a mid-career retrospective of the duo's work in its East Gallery. The show, called Intersections, includes the team's acclaimed piece Evidence of Things Not Seen, a collection of 104 paintings of people arrested during the 1955-56 Alabama bus boycott, along with newer work dealing with homelessness and race in popular culture.
The show, which opens today with the museum's Second Fridays event beginning at 4 p.m., will remain on view through Jan. 20. Visit www.burchfieldpenney.org or call 878-6011.
