A makeshift tea house created from 2,500 tea bags will be the main attraction Friday during the Burchfield Penney Art Center’s monthly free Second Fridays event.
Judith Olson Gregory’s project, “Taking Tea,” is a reflection on the traditions of tea-drinking cultures from across the world and, in part, an attempt to get American consumers to think more deeply about where their tea comes from. According to a release from the Burchfield Penney, the Jamestown native’s work in this show traces “the tumultuous journey of tea from the mountains of China to the lace tablecloths of the British aristocracy.”
As part of the Second Fridays event, the Burchfield Penney’s front yard (1300 Elmwood Ave.) will feature performances from the electronic duo UVB-76 at 5:30 p.m. and video artist Brian Milbrand from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. (Milbrand is preparing to break the Guinness World Record longest video-jockey set on Sept. 19.)
The center’s auditorium will host Chilean poet Cecilia Vicuña at 7 p.m., followed by a series of readings and performances from other poets from 8 to 10 p.m.
Admission is free on Friday between 5 and 8 p.m. Call 878-6011 or visit www.burchfieldpenney.org.
