The Burchfield Penney Art Center’s 50th anniversary party, “Golden,” was such a successful one-night-only celebration of the incredible arts in Buffalo that The Center has decided to do it again! On December 8, 2017, the Center will celebrate its anniversary with “Stay Gold”—an event that reminds us all to stay true to our roots and to stay fresh and invigorated in our artistic goals. In the tradition of Golden in 2016, this event will continue to be a fun, free, and eclectic celebration of all that the Buffalo arts scenes have to offer, including site-specific installations and many local musicians performing throughout the night.
Though the Burchfield Penney Art Center is now 51 years old, this is still relatively young for museums in America, let alone throughout the world. The Center has chosen “Stay Gold” as the title to remind ourselves, and all of Buffalo, that the Burchfield Penney Art Center will continue to embrace emerging and avant-garde art as we continue forward as an arts institution.
By submitting a visual art proposal through the attached online form, we hope artists will take this opportunity to experiment with new and lively ways to express themselves and interact with the public using the Center as a canvas. The goal of the visual art installations is to encourage artists and the public to think about the exciting parts of the building other than the galleries.
Rather than assigning artists to pre-determined locations, we invite artists to select the site they wish to work with. For this reason, it is important that applicants attend a brief staff-guided walk-through on any of the following dates:
Thursday, September 14, 6-7:30 p.m.
Thursday September 28, 6-7:30 p.m.
Thursday, October 5, 6-7:30 p.m.
Artists’ proposals will be reviewed and selected by the Curatorial staff at the Burchfield Penney Art Center. All selected works must adhere to accepted museum installation practices.
If you are unable to attend any of these tours, please contact Heather Gring at gringha@buffalostate.edu to make alternate arrangements. Individuals, collaborations, and collectives are all welcome to apply. An honorarium will be offered to all participants whose proposals are selected.
Proposals are due by October 10, 2017. [Link removed due to 2017 Stay Gold Submission period closed] (All proposals must be submitted online.) Successful candidates will be notified by October 16, 2017. If you have any questions, contact Heather Gring.
