Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Stormy Sky in Late August, August 28, 1916; watercolor with graphite on paper, 13 7/8 x 10 inches (frame: 19 1/4 x 15 inches); Gift of Mr. & Mrs. Armand J. Castellani in honor of Edna M. Lindemann, 1985
A day of sudden effects + great season change –
A cool rainy morning – clearing - vivid blue cold sky – reflected in pools + wet roofs – brilliant cold sunlight
Big powerful misty clouds at noon – They mass at various points + turn the sky to a startling black, up against which are sunlit trees houses + plants
Clears at afternoon – blinding sun – clear damp air – all objects whether looking towards sun or away are flat silhouettes – weeds towards sun are frosty white –
In cornfield at sunset – the autumn cold comes after the sun has set – brill yel – afterglow it is fall –
