Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Milkweed, 1929; gouache with charcoal on paper, 19 3/4 x 15 inches (Frame: 27 3/4 x 23 inches); Gift of the Burchfield Foundation, 1975
Leave for class [Burchfield taught a class at the University of Buffalo during the summer of 1951] early, so to visit the milkweed patch near Springville, (where two summers ago I was delighted by the delirious antics of butterflies that came to feed there—I found the blooming season almost at an end, but a few butterflies still—I thought I could perhaps work from memory.
