The Burchfield Penney Art Center (1300 Elmwood Ave.) will throw open its doors to the public for free Friday night as part of its monthly Second Fridays event, which features two new exhibitions and the premiere of a film score by Kevin Cain.
The art exhibitions are “Shiver,” an installation combining art, science and technology by Colleen Ludwig, and “Craft in Black and White,” a group show featuring work by 15 craft artists who have used black-and-white themes and materials in their work.
Cain, who recently wrapped up his successful tenure as director of the now-defunct Vault Arthouse, is a veteran of Buffalo’s experimental art and music scenes. He’ll play his live score for the German expressionist horror film “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” with a guitar, vibraphone, clarinet and other instruments. The screening starts at 8:30 p.m. on the museum’s second-floor terrace as part of Squeaky Wheel’s annual Silent/Sound Festival.
Though M&T’s sponsorship of the evening technically makes it free to everyone, the Burchfield Penney, taking a cue from New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, is asking for a “suggested donation from ‘not yet’ members.”
