It would be tough to think an artist and venue less suited for one another than the naturalist painter Charles Burchfield and the nerve center of commerce and technology that is Times Square. But there it is, hanging proudly on the side of a Manhattan skyscraper next to advertisements for Broadway shows, Beats headphones and CNN: Burchfield’s 1917 painting “Noontide in Late May.”
The painting, and many other American artworks including the adjacent Chuck Close portrait “Phil,” is on temporary view in Times Square as part of the project Art Everywhere US, which officially launched today. The nationwide initiative, a collaboration among the Outdoor Advertising Association and five major museums, features 58 works of art appearing on some 50,000 outdoor billboards and other advertising spaces in 170 cities.
There are no major billboards given over to artworks in Buffalo, but there are many posters advertising the project throughout Western New York. Check out this map to see the scope of the initiative.
