Newly commissioned artwork will start defining the character inside the John R. Oishei Children's Hospital in September as the new hospital prepares for its opening later this fall.
A diverse blend of art and photographs will start making their way next month to the hospital, which is slated to open in November on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. Volunteers are working with more than 30 artists and collectors to assemble art that will be displayed on themed floors in the hospital.
Oishei has drawn its inspiration, in part, from art collections at Cleveland Clinic and Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
"It will be a very active time in the building," said Scott Propeack, volunteer curator of art at Oishei and interim co-director of the Burchfield Penney Art Center. "It's a living program that will exist at the hospital."
