In studio in morning studying the sketch I made yesterday – It seems to have more to it than I supposed yesterday, yet I cannot bring myself to touch it yet, for time alone will tell whether I have said what I wanted to say. It has taken me many years to know that I must wait.
What endears Delacroix’s journal to me are notes like following –
“Saturday June 11 - Finally go to work at a pretty good pace. It seemed to me that I should never be able to paint any more."
How often, and of course only recently, have I reached the same sense of futility!
P.M. B&I to Buffalo to do some shopping. It was not pleasant in town, & the drive in & out was hateful.
In the evening I tried out a grasswhip I had bought, on the grass back of the pavilion. It worked well, but I got a blister for my trouble.
