July 27-29 – Mon-Tues-Wed –
Studying the Spider-Web Tree picture eliminating many original features – all at once it occurred to me what was needed below was a lake or a small body of water, instead of a hill in shadow – gradually the idea has expanded until now it is to be a full sized lake, reflecting the sun in an inverted pyramid shaped glare, in which are reflected small clouds.
Tuesday evening – Met Mart and the youngsters at the Charter House for supper – (Mart is on vacation and the four of them had spent the day swimming). A pleasant meal – afterwards Peg, Tom & Dave went in swimming again, while we sat at a table on the terrace overlooking the pool, sipping crème-de-menthe.
Humanity, in a physical sense is seen at its best and worse at a swimming pool – we all agreed that only those who had fine well-proportioned bodies should wear the briefest bathing suits. Among these certainly were “our” three youngest – slender and tanned, already good swimmers, they seemed at home in the water or air, and where a joy for us to watch.
An amusing incident: When we came out and sat down – Peggy, wearing a gadget to keep her nose closed climbed out of the pool to suggest that we could see better if we came down below – after she had gone, Bertha said, “Who was that girl?” we had a good laugh at her expense, in which she had to join.
Wednesday – A thunderstorm in the early morning – then gradually clearing – cooler and dryer, (on Tuesday – noon – lunch at H’s – then to Wehlies to get a ventilating fan – we got the last one – Most dealers completely sold out, and more being manufactured now.)
Wed. P.M. – George brought the cupboard for the retreat and installed it – beautiful – varnished red – wood with copper hinges, etc.
