Another thunderstorm in the night.
First light of dawn at 3:00.
a.m. drove to “Minnesota Point” – sand-dunes – finding the wild sweet peas of my childhood.
- Belongs in July 26, no class on Monday [11:00 to Olcott Hall to meet Dr. Miller. Talk about 1 hr. Unload mat’ls [materials] in Tweed Hall
Our first lunch at the apartment.
1:00 To Tweed Hall – the four bright-eyed eager-looking girls on the front steps. ”Are you some of my pupils?” – upstairs – meet Turcotte who was to be the “handy-man” – Dr. Miller comes assemble in studio. Dr. Miller introduces me, and then the painting spot for the day is announced – (Foot of 23rd St. – along the lakeshore)-
Evening dinner with the Millers. We liked Mrs. M at once. She is of Finnish decent & a great admirer of Sibelius. Their apartment unique + attractive (High + pointed gable with painted beams, modern furniture. Mrs. M served a delicious Swiss steak. Afterwards music on a player that Dr. Miller assembled himself. Sibelius 5th Symphony on a long playing record – a thunderstorm came up while it was playing – a fine effect. Interesting discussions.
July 26 Tues.
a.m. shopping at Piggly Wiggly + 5&10.
p.m. First day of teaching (See July 25 entry)
Dinner in apt. at 6:00 – Then for drive west to find Fond-du-lac Park – without success – but take a road northwest – Sunset behind great rocky promontory – a cliff on mountains – Finding Sky-line road – just a narrow gravel road for a long distance between deep woods. Some fine views. Back to city on 61 + 53.
Hot nights – humid weather.
