Kyle Butler's Poised on all edges (2012)

Kyle William Butler states in his brief website bio that he “is an artist from Michigan who currently lives in Buffalo, New York. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a focus in painting from Central Michigan University in 2008 and his Master's degree in Visual Studies from the University at Buffalo in the spring of 2010.”

In organizing the Burchfield Penney Art Center’s Beyond/In Western New York 2010 exhibition, known as “Alternating Currents,” Nancy Weekly and Scott Propeack selected Kyle Butler’s mixed media work that represented a dystopic world with carefully rendered architectonic imagery. He pitted the natural wood grain of his surface with drawn and painted elements that suggest the aftermath of an unexplained apocalypse.

Butler also has been included in exhibitions at the Buffalo Arts Studio (2010), Lost Coast Culture Machine (2010), Nina Freudenheim Gallery (2013 and 2011), Hallwalls, and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. His work was featured in New American Paintings (2010), and is in other collections including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, where he also participated in the creation of Sol Lewitt’s Wall Drawing # 1268: Scribbles: Staircase (AKAG) in 2010. The monumental drawing spans three enormous walls over the museum’s main stone staircase. Butler is represented by the Nina Freudenheim Gallery in Buffalo, where this artwork was first exhibited.

Nancy Weekly is the Head of Collections and the Charles Cary Rumsey Curator for the Burchfield Penney Art Center, the world’s only museum dedicated to American watercolor master Charles E. Burchfield and artists of the Buffalo Niagara region. She also serves as an adjunct lecturer in Museum Studies for the Department of History and Social Studies Education at Buffalo State College.
