Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), The Three Trees, 1931-46; watercolor on paper, 36 x 60 inches; Salem Public Library, Gift of Miss Alice MacMillan in memory of her father Joel, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the MacMillan Book Shop
A dappled rain-imminent day – the sky moved in patches, and at times the sun caught the open spaces and lit up the earth with pale light –
Evening to Three Trees Territory to sketch – cool breeze out of south – remote call of bobwhite – sky a great pattern – rainbow around the sun which was a filmy glow in a grey & yellow sky
Wheat has become yellow. My mind feeds on the poetry of past events –
Night black & windy rain –
