The Burchfield Penney Art Center’s Curator and Manager of Archives Tullis Johnson was invited to contribute to the exhibition The Art of Handwriting, on view at the Smithsonian Archives of American Art in Washington, DC from July 2 - October 27, 2013.
Johnson wrote about a letter from Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967) to Lawrence Arthur Fleischman (1925-1997) which can be found at http://www.aaa.si.edu/collections/images/detail/charles-ephraim-burchfield-letter-to-lawrence-arthur-fleischman-detroit-mich-8930
Fleischman was an art collector, dealer and one of the founders of the Archives of American Art. He was president of the Kennedy Galleries in New York City, where he represented the Burchfield Estate for more than two decades. When the Kennedy Galleries closed, all materials that related to the work of Charles Burchfield were returned to the family. The Burchfield Foundation donated these archival materials to the Burchfield Penney Art Center in 2006.
