Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Dawn in Early Spring, 1946-66; watercolor and charcoal on joined paper, 47 x 54 inches; Private Collection
A dream this morning. Catherine & I out in woods finding some hepaticas, dark blue-violet ones, in their first rich cup-like formation. I awoke, and was flooded with an aching regret for the whole lost early spring of this year; all at once a song sparrow song outside, and my mood changed as suddenly. I look forward to next spring instead of looking back at this spring with vain regrets. Next Spring! What a glorious phrase! Next Spring I will do the Peterbirds, the Redbirds etc.
