July 2 – (Wed.)
Cleaning up studio, which takes most of day.
Evening B+A+I for drive. To Harlem Rd city line for Bearded grass. Then North on Harlem Rd. to see where it goes. Totally new neighborhood – gives me the feeling that places in my dreams have.
Harlem ends at Sheridan Dr. East on this road. Buy cherries on Union Rd. We eat them driving along – Bertha feeding them to me.
South on Harris Hill road (east of Transit) –
At a jog in the road - the view to the south - of Lancaster wide spreading wheat field, flanked by shorn hay fields on both sides, in the foreground. A woods obscuring the turn to the left –
The whole lit up by the mellow light from the horizon sun, very beautiful. In fact, wherever one looked, the effect was ravishing – elysian.
Ellicott Creek –
A calm secluded scene on associates with childhood.
The calm water – deep-toned from the reflections of densely green leaves (dark from the twilight) is partially carved with patches of yellow pond lilies. The yellow buds gleam like yellow stars among the shining pads.
Beyond here rich-looking meadows with cows calmly grazing.
Harris Hill Rd, runs into Central Ave, Lancaster. The abandoned hotel by the R.R.
Home by Aurora St. + Clinton.
