A fresh, windy sunlit day.
Working all day on the “In the Deep Woods” a reconstructed 1918 – (Made at “Rough Run” near Clarkson, Ohio.) Some of the work went well, but great difficulty with inventing a motif to represent the call of the veery thrush. Finally at late afternoon the solution came.
Bertha working in the yard all day. At mid–P.M. [N.M.] brought a sample of paper for me, but B refused to let him see me – which probably meant the difference between my solving & not solving my problem – for he is a long-winded caller. When I called him later he was very short in his answers, and said “your wife – that is, I presume it was your wife (!)– told me” etc. – Evening – Celia Schutz & Mrs. Fisher out.
