June 8 – Wed.
Cold – killing frost in many places.
Dr. Wehling called at 9:20 – I went out to get him at the Statler at 10:00.
He proved to be a likeable fellow – almost at once he showed himself to be a passionate lover of dogs which always provides a good common ground to proceed from.
In the studio, I was at a loss to know what sort of picture to show him – but it soon developed that he liked the fanciful imaginative type best. Altho his field is electronics, he showed an innate sense or perception for the emotional message of a painting. Eventually he picked out five (Woods Cathedral, Hemlock Cathedral, Spring Landscape, Backyard in Golden Sunlight, Cherry Blossom Snow”). I offered these at drastically low prices – viz. half-price as a partial contribution to the University). I would like to see them get “Cherry-Blossom Snow but I am afraid they haven’t much money –
B served us a delicious lunch, and we sat and talked for two hours. Then, Dr. Wehling having to be in Buffalo by 4:00, I drove him in.
