June 4 – Monday –
Leave Valpo a little after 9:00 (549 mi.)
563 m. Stopped and picked flowers growing in and around dunes (orange-yellow flowers, wild lupine, Birdfoot violet)
Complicated getting into Chicago had to ask a couple of times but finally got to International House [University of Chicago] – M.A. [Mary Alice] not back yet waiting in Hall – ancient maps – “watching odd characters”
Finally M.A. + Bob came. She takes mom to see her room then all of us in Bob’s car to main dining hall – lunch cafeteria style – then Bob goes his way – and Evie drives us in car to University Hotel (5519 Blackstone St.) a room with a wall-bed – Leave our things – then (with Evie driving) for drive on Lake Shore Blvd. – downtown and beyond, then back, some of it on Michigan Ave. Stop for milkshakes + talk – then take Evie back to her place + we to hotel, after having made plans for us all to have dinner in the evening.
Bob had a place on the outskirts of the city picked out – we drove miles and miles to it, but when we got there we find it closed on Mondays. So back to a restaurant near the University where we all had steaks – a very good supper and lots of fun – (Bob + Evie’s question jokes – “Did you take a shower last night? – etc.)
