Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Moonlight (Along a Country Road), 1937; watercolor on paper, 20 3/4 x 29 1/2 inches; Private Collection
Solid fall of rain – wind out of southeast – rollicking song of yellowbird heard above clatter of rainspout – Later clouds break & turn to white dapples; trees bending sun whitened under a new breeze – The day progresses calmly to a cool moonlit night – Have just finished a new piece – a sunset in wind – sitting looking at it I wonder if I really knew I was doing it at the time – As I look, I dream of the future – I see paintings before which people are so overcome, they weep – To park in moonlight sketching –
