Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), The Walnut Bed, also known as Black Walnut, unfinished, circa 1934-1957; watercolor, white chalk, and charcoal on paper, 40 x 57 inches; Burchfield Penney Art Center, Gift of the Burchfield Foundation, 1975
A dream early this morning – a dark room with a window in the east, thru which one could see to the southeast. A Catholic sister was sitting by the side of a sick woman in bed, patting her hand and uttering words of comfort. Outside the window a waning August moon cast uncanny shadows under the small trees and bushes in a yard – it seemed the hour was 3 A.M.
