Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), In a Deserted House, 1918-1939; Watercolor, ink or gouache, black crayon or charcoal over graphite pencil on two joined sheets of wove paper mounted on board, 22 ¼ x 29 1/8 inches; Detroit Institute of Arts
A dream – I was painting and looking over my pencil studies. The painting was of a huge window with rain falling on snow outside – in front I was to put a portrait of myself. The work seemed marvelous to me, as did the pencil studies, and a water-color of a young moon behind drifting clouds. I thought someone suggested that this could be used to illustrate the last hour before the end of the world.
