Fireworks and flashbulbs will light up George Eastman House to celebrate Anthony Bannon’s 16 years at the helm.Saturday’s Farewell Gala marks his final night as director of the East Avenue photography museum. Naturally, every moment will be captured by cameras worthy of its namesake. Partiers will dance, dine and flaunt their “technicolor” gowns and tuxes — the recommended attire for this ball.
After a few potent cocktails, Bannon’s fans will pay tribute to his tenure, the longest in Eastman House’s history. Bannon launched programs in photo and film preservation, acquired the Technicolor and Merchant Ivory Productions archives, and began putting the museum’s classic images online.
Yet Bannon, 69, isn’t ready to ride into the sunset. Last month he was named executive director of the Burchfield Penney Art Center on the campus of State UniversityCollege at Buffalo. It’s where he began his career as a museum leader in 1985, long before the small gallery was transformed into a $33-million center of western New York culture.
