Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Moonlight (Along a Country Road), 1937; watercolor on paper, 20 3/4 x 29 1/2 inches; Private Collection
Home along the [dark] meadows by creek in the pale moonlight – shrill piping from ponds, an occasional trill – up over hill. I walk over sleeping flowers... the pale moon shadows from the trees fall on the ground – along [dark] country road.
