Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Dawn in Early Spring, 1946-66; watercolor and charcoal on joined paper, 47 x 54 inches; Private Collection
Early this morning I had my first Spring dream. I have one every year about this time, in which I find wild flowers growing in countless numbers amidst ice and snow. And when I awoke it was to hear the cardinal singing “what cheer! whoit, whoit, whoit, whoit, whoit”!
