Throughout her year as Burchfield artist-in-residence, Janelle Lynch will share her thoughts and impressions with us as we share her journey into the spirit and work of Charles Burchfield.
Re: Colin Dabkowski's piece about "Cycles" in the Buffalo News today, I respectfully disagree with his characterization of CEB's doodles as "absentminded."
In a statement that accompanied the doodles, Burchfield wrote:
It should not be assumed that such doodling has no value: true most doodles are trivial and
meaningless,or worse, are boringly repetitious. Nevertheless it can be a form of subconscious
thinking in visual terms. Some of my most useful abstract motifs (used in many serious pictures,
early and late) come from such seemingly idle diversions.
