Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Brookside Music, 1950; watercolor on paper, 26 x 40 inches; Private Collection
April 8 – Tuesday –
P.M. Suddenly decided to go painting – To Big woods at first, but I cannot get an idea (too much snow in the woods.) so eastward on route 39 – (by way of Becker Rd.) Here an old deserted house + a frog pond in back - + decide to stay here. – Here there was less snow, and as the peepers were singing, I planned to do a swamp picture of pussy willows + peepers – As I worked, the clouds thinned out + sun appeared – all the red wings seemed to go crazy and sang continuously. Stayed until moon came up, then home because Mrs. Fischer + C. Shultz were coming out.
