Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Dawn in Early Spring, 1946-66; watercolor and charcoal on joined paper, 47 x 54 inches; Private Collection
First wakening – blinding fast quarter moon in a black sky; next the red horizon fading upwards; and lastly the white sun flooding the frost-coated earth... The melted frost in the frothy sun, sparkles and [turns] the jagged turf whitish; robins are the songsters.
Returning from school the brilliant morning sunshine flooding the trees... I think how the day should be spent afield. Again to I long for absolute solitude.
