April 6 – Monday –
More than any other bird’s the song of the Song Sparrow evokes all places and phases of spring – This overflowing song calls to mind old movies, cat-tails swamps, dark ravines with their ice-caves and snow remnants; meadows at morning and at evening – winding streams with white-tipped pussy willows – bursting maple bloom, snow bound sugar bushes. There is pain in the emotions it evokes as well as elation.
B & I to Buffalo on errands to Kleinhans and Singers Drug Store – Lunch at H’s –
P.M. – In studio – changed the sky in “North Woods in Spring”
In the evening it still did not seem right.
