Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Spring Flood, 1931; oil on canvas, 35 5/8 x 49 5/8 inches; Fine Art Museums of San Francisco, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd, 1979
Heavy rains. Wonderfully mild air – the whole earth opening up –
One flash of lightning – thunder – a fine primitive sound -
The creek swollen with rumbling ochre water. Robins. The area around the studio flooded. The first real impact of spring. The old agony returns (If it should fail to come I would be dead).
A.M. - M.A. & Ellen in studio looking at pictures
Play Vaughn-Williams 5th Symphony – a truly noble creation.
Early P.M. play “Swing Low” & “Steal Away” with door open.
Later – B & I to city line shopping –
Sun comes out – warm, the earth reeking with odors, Robins scolding and calling.
Mourning Dove calls from the pines.
