Apr. 3 – Thurs.
Unable to sleep last night – anxious for today’s trip to the woods; and mulling over the problem of teaching. Finally B heard me + came in – it was good to pour out my troubles to her sympathetic ear – she heated milk for us + I finally fell asleep.
Up at 8:00 – determined to go out altho the weather report is showers at intervals.
B packs lunch + I set off – good to be driving southwards. Raining some already.
Stop a moment at a ravine – the elemental sound of a brooklet –
Arrive at the Big Woods.
For a stroll – the woods wonderful and deep with the mystery of north woods –
I planned to sketch after lunch. But before I got back to the car, it began to rain – almost at once it changed to snow + sun a small blizzard was raging – I sat in the car, listened to the radio + ate my lunch (cold chicken etc. very delicious).
The sky cleared + I had hopes of being able to paint after all – took another short walk into the woods, and was all the more stirred by it’s somber foreboding – But before I could return again, another blizzard raging – So I gave it up and went home.
At Gardenville, all is clear- no rain.
Letter from Gino – he wants action at once + wants me again to do the dirty work.
We decide to go to Buffalo to see a movie –
Hank in to get molding for frames.
