Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Little Italy in Spring, 1927-28; watercolor on paper, 26 1/2 x 39 5/8 inches; Collection of Linda and Louis Kaplan, Washington, D.C.
At the One-Arm—the hurried endless coming & going of the “lunchers” —the lusty manner in which they counter men give their orders—they yell “one ai-egg” with a harsh exaggerated rasping sound as tho they were cursing—they increased this link by little then drop back again to a milder tone, only to work up again to harsh fortissimo. There is something admirable about this.
