In Conversation: Robert Gober on Charles Burchfield
Burchfield Penney Art Center, Buffalo Mar 4 2010
By Ashley Johnson
The late American watercolourist Charles Burchfield, who reached peaks of success in the 1930s and 1960s, isn’t a figure who comes up often in contemporary-art conversation. But all that’s changing with “Heat Waves in a Swamp: The Paintings of Charles Burchfield,” a career survey co-curated by acclaimed artist Robert Gober. With “Heat Waves” currently on at the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo to May 23 (its next stop will be the Whitney in New York) critic Ashley Johnson sits down for a face-to-face chat with Gober about regionalism, realism and creative forms of reinvention. (Running time 12 min 24 sec)
