Feb 7, 1916 –
A wonderful day such as has not occurred for several years – It opened with a tremendous blizzard. While preparing for school I was anxious lest it should be over before I got out in it. But it only increased as I started out.
I became intoxicated and danced and ran –
Everything was blotted out except near trees which were dim feathery blurs – Up to woods north of Museum – Snow abating – wind increases – west sky turns metallic blue-green, then emerald; the east is yellow; the sky opens + the rising sun bursts forth –
From life room window immense sky with a few yellow top clouds – snow blown higher than houses – All day it is such. Evening – immensity of air and wind – yellow sky, turning suddenly dark grey, and yellow again – Ice on waterfall –
In contrast to this; W – called up and told that a butterfly had come out where he stayed. I went over to see it. It was a black swallow-tail + had emerged from a cocoon on an azalea-plant which had stood in the garden all summer.
