A dream—B & I on a train going southward, as we entered Virginia it became warmer & more mellow—a drowsy Summer afternoon with golden ochre sunlight. Groups of houses & other buildings—old faded vermillion, velvety in texture, and saturated with the golden light. A strange bizarre village comprised of ancient tall narrow wooden towers (about 8 to 10 feet square) in which people lived. For balconies on the various levels they had attached huge Victorian chairs and davenports. I was greatly excited & said to B “I must come back here to paint.”
