12:00 to Meeting of Art Committee at Gallery – Turned out to be an interview with one of the candidates for the job of Director – Parkhurst now at Oberlin –
Before the meeting talking to Schenk & Parkhurst – I asked S – why the gallery did not own a Hopper – He thought they should but said he had had one up among others for consideration & that the committee showed no interest – Incredible – He turned to Parkhurst – “How do you feel about Hopper –” – P. declined to answer. How blind all these people are to allow a current fashion to observe their negotiation of Hopper’s greatness –
For lunch they had provided eight sandwiches for five men. Parkhurst ate but one sandwich an egg salad I felt sorry for him.
