January 31 – Thursday –
A glorious winter day – cold (12°) brilliant sun, with a deep clear blue sky – dry air –
a.m. – to Dr. – (Reisman) –
Home, + to studio – worked all day on Solitude – at first, it went slow, but after a few fumbles, it began to get better at the end the important section of a pussy-willow bush seemed to be solved.
In the mail, formal request to both of us from State University College for “Dusty Road in July” and “Swamp fire in March” – with lengthy explanations of the purpose of the exhibition etc. – excellently done.
About 3:30 Bertha called on the inter-com to tell me that something was wrong with the humidifier - water running all over the floor – for once, I had the wit to turn off the water-supply – called George S. (not at home) – He called back at 5:00 and said he would come in a few days –
Evening – R’s [Richter’s] over for a visit – which was very pleasant –
After they left we watched with pleasure two “Family Life” programs – “Leave it to Beaver” and “My Three Sons”
Evening music – Hayden’s Symphony #98 – The second movement is one of his finest –
