Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Landscape with Orange Sun, 1916; Watercolor, gouache and graphite on paper, 16 x 13 9/10 inches; Image from the Burchfield Penney Archives
As I was shaving -- in the bathroom, after school I happened to look out of the window. The sun was just falling into a yellow and orange mist - not a red or yellow disc but a fiery ball of gold. Four tiny gilded clouds floated past in a row past the sun, which had now sunk lower and became redder and redder, till it disappeared.
